How to get found on Google Maps: the exact fixes for 2026
If a neighbour in your town has a burst pipe, they do not type a website address. They search "plumber near me" and they check who comes up on the map first. That is where jobs are won and lost.
The frustrating part is that plenty of trades businesses doing brilliant work already have the reviews to win. They just are not showing up. Here is why, and the exact fixes, in the order you should do them.
Why you have reviews but still are not showing up
Google Maps is not ranking you on how good you are. It ranks a structured profile. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, Google does not have enough information to trust that you operate in the area a customer is searching. And when Google is not sure, it shows a competitor instead.
The three things Google checks are relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is mostly fixed. Relevance and prominence you can control.
The fix: a complete, consistent profile
- Fill in every category and service field with what you actually do. A "plumber" who only lists "plumbing" is missing "boiler repair", "bathroom fitting" and "emergency plumber". Each category is a different search you could win.
- Use a real local address, not a P.O. box. If you are a mobile trade without a shop, be honest about it, but a consistent local presence still beats nothing.
- Pick the categories Google actually uses. Your primary category is the single biggest relevance signal you control.
- Add a local phone number, not a national 0800 number. Local numbers match local searches.
Consistency is the quiet multiplier
Your name, address and phone number (NAP) should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory. This is called citation consistency. Google cross-checks these to decide how real your business is. A single mismatch, like "St" instead of "Street", quietly costs you trust.
Reviews that match the map pin
Reviews are prominence. But not just any reviews. Reviews that mention the town or area you serve reinforce relevance to that location. Gently encouraging customers to mention the service and area in their review helps Google connect you to that search.
Do the fundamentals before anything clever
There is no shortcut around this. Before you spend on ads or new directories, the profile needs to be complete, consistent and review-backed. Most businesses fix these basics and see the biggest jump within about 30 to 60 days.
